El Pedregal Greenhouse Community Bank Group's story

Established in 2012 in El Pedregal in rural Honduras, this group started with 17 founding members, who understood the importance of basic financial services for the development of their community and the future of their families in their historically excluded communities. The main business of the families at El Pedregal is the reproduction and selling of decorative plants and fruit trees. Each family runs and manages their own nurseries. Today, they are the largest provider of plants, trees, and flowers for gardening companies in Honduras’s capital, Tegucigalpa. Also they have clients around the country.

The group have grown and diversified their product offerings and the number of members (51 members today), but still have limited access to financial resources to grow their business. This association and all of its members are key actors in protecting the biodiversity of the Natural Reserve of Uyuca. 140 species of birds and 80 species of mammals live safely in this reserve, under the watch of the families from El Pedregal who prevent deforestation and extinguish fires during summer.

To continue their growth, 5 members of this association are seeking working capital loans to increase the capacity of production in their nurseries and meet the increasing demand.
