Las Pulguitas De Yumbel Group's story
This communal bank is called “Las Pulguitas de Yumbel” and it is made up of 22 members (20 women and 2 men) from the city of Puerto Montt, Chile. Their businesses are primarily fishing, selling used clothes, a dessert shop, a butcher shop and a perfume and accessories shop. The group member interviewed was María, who is the president of the group. In the picture she is in the first row on the far right, wearing a green scarf and holding a white hat in her hand. She is an ambulatory used-clothes saleswoman. She sells in five different parts of the city, including at the flea market on Yumbel street on Sundays. She takes Tuesdays and Thursdays off. With her earnings, she helps economically support her family, which includes her husband, her daughter and the two young granddaughters who live with her. María purchases her merchandise both in fairs and in stores. She plans on investing this loan in clothing and in curtains or other household fabrics. Her dream is to have a set locale from which to sell, in some part of the city. María very much enjoys the support she receives from her Fondo Esperanza loan officer, and the atmosphere of trust that exists within her communal bank. She also says that thanks to the loans she has received, she feels more secure in her business. Puerto Montt is a city in the south of Chile, located in the Los Lagos region. The attractions of Puerto Montt are its beautiful green landscapes; its beaches, which are special because they do not have many tourists; its artisan crafts and goods; and its cuisine, especially its reputation for fish and seafood. Puerto Montt is also the port of entry to the Isla Grande de Chiloé, which is rich in traditions and legends.
