A loan helped to buy ingredients for her popular ice creams!

Adonai Group's story

Variations of popular ice creams are enjoyed throughout the world! Maria, a 50 year old single mother of three adult children (21-28), makes delicious flavors in the department/state of Quiche in Guatemala. She shares that her business is quite popular and her clientele grows daily! Although she did not attend school, she has learned to keep accounts and do accounting. Her children, who have completed the 6th grade, assist her in the business. She sells in the local market and in convenience stores in her community. She is requesting her sixth Kiva loan to buy fruit, sugar, cinnamon and purified water.

Maria, along with eight other Maya “K’iche” ladies is a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Adonai” in the department/state of Quiche. The ladies are very proud of their beautiful traditional clothing that they wear on a daily basis. A Facilitator, who speaks their “K’iche” language, designs educational trainings and uses games, role playing, pictures and diagrams to share the information. Maria comments, “Thanks to our training that are included in the “Microcredit Plus” program, we can improve the administration of our businesses.” These businesses include the sales of clothing, personal care products, ice creams and traditional textiles. Another “plus” in the program are bi-monthly health care services. A visiting nurse offers basic exams (blood sugar, breast, blood pressure) and services (family planning).

Thank you, Kiva investors for learning about Maria and her friends!
