A loan helped a women-owned business to upgrade our computer equipment and grow our business.
When I first came to the United States ,I was admitted to the Intensive care unit of a hospital for a life-threatening illness. Despite the fact that I was unable to communicate in English, I was not offered an interpreter. Not being able to fully understand what was happening added tenfold to my stress level. Later, I found out that my case was not unique and that interpreters are not always provided for individuals with limited English proficiency. When the time came to change careers to become an interpreter seemed to me the right choice. After a few years and now as staff interpreter for the Texas Medical Center, I experienced firsthand the barriers interpreters; care providers and administrators have to overcome in order to deliver interpretation services in a timely manner. One of the main obstacles to providing these services is the coordination of interpreters, especially during emergency and disaster situations.
