A loan helped a single mom to purchase farming inputs such as certified seed and nutrient-rich fertilizer to boost the quality of her produce.

Lilian's story

Meet Lilian (46). She lives with her three school-going children in a remote village in the Eldoret region of Kenya. She is a single smallholder farmer who is very determined to give her children a decent living.

In Kenya, agriculture is one of the most competitive industries, especially due to the high costs of operations necessary to improve farming. Such costs include the cost of land acquisition and inputs which have skyrocketed.

To meet the high costs of inputs, farmers have been forced to borrow from financial institutions which sometimes impose very complicated procedures in loan distribution. Some farmers, especially women, end up in hopelessness and despondency, lacking the morale needed to invest in agriculture.

As a single woman, Lilian has always promised herself that she will never burden her friends with her problems. She is borrowing this loan to purchase farming inputs such as certified seed and nutrient-rich fertilizer to boost the quality of her produce, increase her profits and elevate her standard of living. This loan will help a rural, single woman give her children healthy lifestyle and thus hope for a better future.
