Jose's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to invest in a bulk purchase of wood and paint, and also pay for his mother's funeral and burial expenses.

Jose's story

Jose's previous loan is nearly paid off. He would like to invest in a bulk purchase of wood and paint, and also pay for his mother's funeral and burial expenses.

Jose has been selling through NOVICA since 2010. This is his story:

Born in Chichicastenango, Guatemala, Jose learned his craft from his father. "When I was younger, he would only allow me to sandpaper a piece, and as I got older he would let me paint too. It wasn't until I was older that he'd finally let me carve the wood. I remember well the first piece I ever did completely on my own: an angel. I put it among the things my father took to the market to sell, and then I lost track of it! I hope it got sold to someone who appreciated it because at the time, I was only an apprentice."

"A week ago my mother passed away; she had a severe pain in her lungs, and I couldn't stand it. This is very sad for me because she was the one who taught me the trade of carving wood. She was my teacher, and so art is a way of continuing to honor her memory. I thank you very much for this new loan that will help me to continue producing, and also cover my mother's funeral and burial expenses. Thanks with all my heart."
