A loan helped me teach more Oakland youth about environmental sustainability.
I grew up in a family that did not “need” anything. We always had food, utilities, shelter, clothes, cable, savings, vacations, and so much more. So even when my dad was unemployed we (me + siblings) never noticed or had any extremes forced upon us that we had to confront or changed our lives drastically. Double OG | Original Organic Gardener | OOG | works in local communities to share and integrate diverse perspectives and knowledge for a sustainable world. I became aware of my white privilege after high school when I started hanging out with older black men twice my age. They experienced life, had kids, even grandkids, and they were younger than my parents and the perspective they offered was so unlike anything my white parents grew up with. All these moments aligned up for me around 18/19. I just began culinary school and was learning about world-class chefs and the consistent theme that resonated with me the most was the foundation aspect. I had learned a bit of this from Nancy Oaks and Pam Mazzola at Boulevard in SF and the Meals on Wheels program the restaurant was so deeply connected to. I was going between so many different worlds of social-economic backgrounds of people I worked with, clients we served, the house I came and rested my head at. Since then, All I have worked on is helping and giving back.
