A loan helped to purchase additional grocery and food stock for her business.

Donata's story

Donata is a refugee, but more than that she is the mother of six, a wife, an industrious skilled entrepreneur and a business owner with a proven track record of success. She owns and runs a retail grocery store at the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. Since starting the business , it has gained a good reputation in the camp and, as a result, has been able to build a base of loyal clientele over time.

Donata fled the violence in her native home of Burundi due to political insecurities in 2016. After resettling at the Kakuma Refugee Camp, she saw the need to start the retail business to provide her fellow refugees and the host community with affordable grocery and food items, while allowing her a stable source of income at the same time. The store has experienced considerable growth over the past few years and she has been able to increase the initial inventory. The store has also been able to accommodate two employees to help in its running.

After actively participating in AEC’s business training program focused on improving financial management and increasing sales, Donata is requesting a loan to grow the business even further. This loan will help her increase working capital so as to purchase additional grocery and food stock for the business. This will ensure that she continues providing the community with more grocery and food options, while at the same time allowing growth and continuity for her business.
