Avec Kawral Kopara Group's story

Houssainatou carries out her business in Senegal. She is the president of the "Avec Kawral Kopara" group, which is in the Fulani language and means "gathering". She is illiterate and 55 years old, and the one shown in the photo. She is married and mother of four children aged six to 16 years old. All of her children attend school.

Like all the fourteen other women of the group, Houssainatou dreams of expanding her breeding business, hence the need to be financed by a microfinance institution. This loan will be used to buy sheep, feed, and possibly vaccines to fight against diseases. In order to maximize her profit, she sources her livestock in the surrounding villages to resell after six to nine months of fattening in one of the largest weekly markets in the sub-region which is in her district. Due to the high demand, she has been practicing this breeding activity for over 20 years.

It is with the profit she draws from her business that she helps her husband, a farmer, to pay the school fees of their children, medical costs, etc. Sometimes she is confronted with shortages of goods often due to lack of financing.
