Chantrea's story

Chantrea, age 46, is married and she lives with her family in the Peam Ro district, Prey Veng province. She is a farmer and has been working in the agriculture business for many years.

Chantrea and her husband are considering the challenges of low yield due to pest and disease attack on cultivated crops. With a poor level of mechanized agricultural activities, product processing and storage in order to meet these necessities becomes of crucial importance. Agriculture produce is an essential demand and means of survival for her family members, as it plays a great role in almost all aspects of life. Because of the phenomenon of Covid-19, her income from selling agriculture produce has decreased because the customers in her community have reduced demand, affecting prices, and reducing income-earning opportunities. However, the way she does farming is still based on traditional methods.

Due to the rainy season, she has a lots of farm work to complete and she also needs additional capital to pay for her operating expenses. She has applied for a loan of KHR 10,000,000 to do agriculture. With funds from Kiva lenders, she can pay plowing fees, labor costs, purchase fertilizers to care for her crops, and raise some poultry. She also can save some money for use for future needs. She believes that through her hard work and perseverance she will be able to attain a better standard of living someday.
