Bile's story

Bile is a refugee of Somali descent living at the Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya. More than that, he is a father of eight, a husband and a skilled and experienced entrepreneur who owns and runs a grocery store at the camp. His business is strategically and conveniently located to serve both his fellow refugees and the host community with quality and affordable grocery and food items. He is also a certified WFP food merchant for the refugees.

Bile and his family fled the violence in his native home as a result of political instabilities in 2009 and after resettling at the camp, he started the grocery store business in 2013 as a means of provision for his large family. He has become well-known and the business has gained a good reputation and continues to amass a strong base of loyal customers. The store additionally provides a means of livelihood to three employees who help in its running.

Bile actively and successfully underwent AEC’s business training program focused on financial management and increasing sales. He was able to apply all that he learned from the training in running the business which now boasts improved cashflows and efficiency. He is now looking to get a loan in order to purchase additional grocery and food items as stock for the store. This will enable him continue providing the community with more consumption options, and at the same time, allow him continue providing for his family.
