Las Estrellitas Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to buy fabrics and thread in various colors.

Las Estrellitas Group's story

There are many Maya ladies who have little or no formal education, like 27-year-old Irma. Her parents could only send her to school for 2 years because she was one of many in the family and education is not free in Guatemala.

Irma showed great talent at an early age and she was also determined to move ahead. Now, she is married, has 3 children between the ages of 4 and 8, and administers her own seamstress shop. Her husband helps her in the business and the couple fabricates traditional, beautiful embellished aprons called “delantales”. They sell by order only at the wholesale level.

Her business is growing each year and now it is time to buy supplies. Irma requests her 2nd Kiva loan to buy various colors of fabrics and thread at the wholesale level.

Irma, along with 7 other women, formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Estrellitas” or “The Stars” in the department/state of Totonicapan. Their objectives are to enlarge their animal husbandry (chickens and pigs) and traditional textile business. They are determined to create more income to support the needs of their families, including the education of their children. They meet monthly, make loan payments and participate in educational training sessions that give them essential information about business, health, family and women. Every other month, a visiting nurse attends to them in their homes. This essential combination of loans, education and health care is called “Microcredit Plus”.

Thank you, Kiva investors!
