A loan helped to buy farm inputs, such as nutrient-rich fertilizers, to improve her tea farm.

Rael's story

Rael, a 68-year-mother, lives in Nyamira, a town whose surroundings have vast agricultural potential with numerous small farms and also vast agricultural enterprises. Her family's main income sources are milk from their dairy farm and crop farming. She also practices tea farming. Rael has been farming for the past 40 years.

The major impediment to the development of smallholder farms in Kenya is the lack of short-term credit facilities. Juhudi Kilimo, in partnership with Kiva, is working hard to support smallholder farmers in Kenya through financing, which guarantees their survival.

Rael is seeking a loan to buy farm inputs, such as nutrient-rich fertilizers, to improve her tea farm. A loan will enable her to improve her production through the use of quality farm inputs. This intervention will help her fill the increasing demand for tea in the market, and in the process, generate more income to repay the loan and elevate the quality of life for her family.
