A loan helped Pascuala to buy colorful traditional clothing to resell.

Tzampoj Central Group's story

The colorful traditional clothing of the Guatemala Maya is well known worldwide among admirers of handmade, quality textiles. It is beautiful and very unique. Pascuala, a young 20 year old woman, has a business selling traditional textiles in the department/ state of Solola. She lives with her parents and uses part of her income to cover household expenses. Pascuala graduated from high school with a teaching certificate but chose to become an entrepreneur. She offers her clothing on social media as well as to neighbors and friends. Pascuala understands that the approaching holidays will bring an influx of customers. She is requesting her 1st KIVA loan to buy traditional houses or “huipiles”, wrap around skirts or “cortes” and “fajas” or woven belts.

Pascuala, together with 7 other women, is a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Tzampoj Central” in the department/ state of Solola. These ladies farm/ sell coffee, basic grains, and vegetables. They use their income to cover household expenses including the education of their children. They learn to prioritize their expenses, save for emergencies and budget at their monthly meetings. Educational trainings cover topics related to health, business, family and women. Every other month, a visiting nurse offers healthcare services. This combination of loans, education and health care is called “Microcredit Plus” and it works!

Thank you, KIVA investors, for the vital role you play in the lives of Pascuala and her friends!
