Fatmata's story

Greetings from Sierra Leone! This is 42 year old Fatmata from Wilberforce branch. She is married with five children between the ages of 6 and 24 years old and all of them are attending school. She also has two other relatives who depend on her. She started this business to care for her family welfare.

Fatmata runs a food business and sells "cookery". “Cookery” is a modest term for the wealth of spicy stews that are cooked by local people and served with rice. Fatmata sells cookery beside a busy road. The building blocks of her stews are palm oil, cassava leaf, rice, green chilli's, seasoning (like Maggi or red pepper) and chicken or fish.

She has been in this business for 14 years now. Her other source of income comes from her husband’s business. Her main challenge is slow sales sometimes during COVID 19.

Fatmata requested this loan through BRAC Sierra Leone to purchase food stuffs such as rice, oil, palm oil, pepper, Maggi, fish, onions, vegetables, chicken and other assorted item to increase her business.

Fatmata says that the extra income from this loan will help to educate her children. In the future, she would like to establish a big restaurant. She says thanks to BRAC and Kiva for their support.
