A loan helped an indoor mushroom farm protect crops from frequent power outages in Puerto Rico.
I was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico. When hurricane Maria hit in 2017, the island’s severe lack of food sovereignty became evident and I felt the need to help solve that problem. A year later, after many trials at home, I started Huerto Rico LLC with the idea of growing delicious, nutritious and sustainably produced mushrooms. During 2019, our production grew and so did our team, we participated in local venture accelerator programs Pre18 (by Parallel18) and EnterPRize (by Grupo Guayacán). 2020, however, started out with a bang. An earthquake knocked out power a for almost a week in January, which resulted in the death of most of our crops. And in March an island-wide lock-down due to COVID19 drastically limited the availability of raw materials necessary for production. We decided to adapt our production model to make it more resilient and are looking to invest in equipment that will allow us to mitigate the impact of natural disasters.
