Amistad Chiquimulteca Group's story

Francisca is a 52-year-old woman who graduated from high school with a diploma in science and arts. She is exceptional, as the 32,000 ladies in Friendship Bridge have an average of three years of formal education.

She embroiders traditional fabrics with cross-stitching and also, for 24 years, has worked with her husband in a business selling oil for all types of vehicles. Thanks to this income, they have been able to provide a better quality of life for their three children (18–25 years old), including their educational studies.

Since the oil business is growing, Francisca wants to invest more into her textile business by buying more high-quality yarns and fabrics to offer new styles and increase production. She is requesting a third Kiva loan.

Along with seven other Maya K'iche women, Francisca is a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank "Amistad Chiquimulteca" located in the department (state) of Totonicapán. These ladies join 30,000 other women in participating in the "Microcredit Plus" program of Friendship Bridge that focuses on empowering women through educational sessions in self-esteem, health, hygiene, and good business management (budgeting, investing, saving). With micro-credit from Kiva investors, they are able to inject capital into their small businesses—traditional textiles (blouses, shawls, belts), poultry, and livestock.

Thank you, Kiva investors, for your investments in the growth of the small businesses of women like Francisca and her friends!
