Melanie's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped me to provide primary care services to those medically underserved.

Melanie's story

I am the first person to complete graduate school in my family. While opening a clinic and working full-time I am also a doctoral candidate with expected date of graduation May 2021. I grew up in the city where my clinic is located. For the first 12 years of my life I lived in an area of my city that was impacted with socioeconomic barriers. I saw the effect that a lack of access to adequate medical care had on those within my ethnic background. Being an African American female in the medical profession comes with it's own set of challenges. Along with being one of the few African American professors at the university which I teach , in the graduate studies program, has also opened my eyes to the needs within academia. These challenges and barriers have fueled my passion to provide my community with the best healthcare. The joy of seeing a patient's health improve with just the addition of a low cost medication or treatment is part of my motivation. I feel I owe my community because I am who I am because of them.
