Las Nubes De Vatz Chocola Group's story

Traditional and colorful textiles such as Mayan blouses called "huipiles", "sashes", belts and hair bands, take time to weave and embroider. These beautiful garments are admired by travelers and collectors around the world. María has made this product for many years on a backstrap and wooden loom. As she is a married woman and mother of 4 children over the age of 12, this business allows her to divide her time into home and business responsibilities. Maria was unable to attend school, but joined forces with her husband to send their children to elementary school. As the product is sold within and outside of her community, Maria's daughter helps her with the orders. She applies for the 1st KIVA loan to buy a variety of yarn to use for weaving.

There are 8 women of Ixil descent who are members of the Puente de Amistad Communal Bank “Las Nubes de Vatz Chocola”. They live in a rural area of the department / state of Quiché, an hour's walk from the nearest town. They are weavers of "huipiles", belts and hair bands. Others raise chickens. At the monthly meetings, women appreciate getting information on how to better run their businesses, care for their families, and empower themselves. Every two months, women have access to basic health services. “Microcredit Plus” is the name given to the combination of loans, education and health services.

Thank you KIVA Lenders for driving development for these women!
