Sophia's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to buy a biodigester that will transform her cows’ manure into renewable energy (biogas) and organic fertilizer.

Sophia's story

Sophia lives in Kiambu with her parents. She supports her family with income from her five cows and her annual vegetable yield. Sophia must burn wood for cooking and heating bathwater, and she worries about the poor air quality’s effect on her family. She also must take time chopping the wood she burns.

So, Sophia plans to use a Sistema Biobolsa biodigester to eliminate wood, fossil fuels and chemical fertilizers from her farm. With the biodigester, she will transform her cows’ manure into renewable energy (biogas) and organic fertilizer. As she puts manure into the biodigester, bacteria will convert it into both biogas for cooking and nutrient-rich fertilizer that she will use on her fields.

Sophia’s biodigester will enable her to increase her crops’ yields, eliminate the need to chop wood, and use the money she used to spend on fossil fuels and chemical fertilizer to invest in buying additional cows. With this Kiva loan she will realize her dream of making her farm economically and environmentally sustainable in order to continue the generations-old tradition of farming in Kiambu.

This loan represents 75% of the full price of the biodigester; the remaining part was covered by a cash down payment and a government subsidy.
