Alejandrias Santa Catarina Pal Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to buy yarn at wholesale.

Alejandrias Santa Catarina Pal Group's story

The economy of the Department of Sololá is based on agricultural production (corn, beans, and vegetables), but another essential segment is the production of traditional fabrics made by the local women. Ana, age 55, is one of these women who makes traditional textiles. She is the mother of 13 children between the ages of 16 and 37. Thanks to the efforts of Ana and her husband, all of their children have received a complete education. She weaves centerpieces, sashes, and “huiples” [traditional blouses]. During these difficult times, she has also innovated her business by offering traditional masks. In Ana’s words: “I feel happy because with the business I can develop as an owner and increase my family's standard of living.” To expand her business, she has applied for her third Kiva loan. Ana will buy yarn at wholesale.

Ana and the six other women of the “Alejandrias Santa Catarina Pal” Communal Bank live on the shores of the beautiful Lake Atitlán in the Department of Sololá. They have little formal education, but they learn a lot from the educational seminars offered as part of the “Microcredito Plus" program that consists of loans, education, and health services. These seminars cover topics such as finance, administration, management of small textile businesses, and the sale of firewood. Other areas that impact their growth focus on self-esteem, leadership, and entrepreneurship. Every two months, the women receive basic health services.

For these women to have a successful holistic future, the lender-financed loans from Kiva are important. Thank you!
