De La Central Semena Group's story
Currently, Guatemalan women are in a constant search for new opportunities to improve their quality of life and combat poverty in their families. This is the case of 22-year-old María, who never tires of starting new businesses. She is a married woman and has a 2-year-old girl. María studied at school for 6 years, but her wish is that her daughter can attain higher education in the future. Three years ago she saw the importance of distributing vegetables in her community market, so she requested a space in the market. She grows and distributes carrots, cabbage, potatoes, coriander, 3 times a week. Maria wants to start sowing but knows that without the support of KIVA lenders it will not be possible. She will invest in the purchase of a variety of seeds. There are 7 women who are of Quiché Mayan descent and participate in the monthly meetings of the Puente de Amistad Community Bank “De la Central Semena”. They make loan payments and then participate in trainings on business management, women's empowerment, and family care. Business skills in budgeting, saving and investing help women grow their typical skirt weaving, agriculture and livestock businesses. Every two months, they have access to basic health services, which, together with educational sessions, are a winning combination of the Microcredit Plus program. These women hope to eliminate poverty from their families with the generous support of KIVA's lenders. Thank you!
