A loan helped a husband & wife team launch their soil health restoration business.

Shannon's story

I have always had deep interests in biology, science, planet health, and growing healthy things. My husband, Nick, and I began our 2500 sqft food forest project in Spring 2019 and saw a return of more species diversity (birds, beneficial insects, and pollinators) than with the English styled gardening we previously employed. Witnessing this return of life lead us down a path of exploration into soil biology, soil health, permaculture, korean natural farming, composting, and vermicomposting. We want to share what we have learned and help enroll our local community into more regenerative food-waste and gardening practices so that we can sequester more carbon, mitigate climate change, and make nutrient dense food more accessible for all. We recognize that not everyone will go as "all-out" as we have, even keeping 20,000 composting worms in our spare bedroom (ha-ha) , but have a passion to help more people divert more waste from the landfill and convert more lawns into chemical-free, food producing gardens. It's important work that we're honored to be able to do.
