A loan helped to buy mulberry bark for making tapa cloth and to repair the damaged roof of her house.

'atelaite's story

'Atelaite is a 41-year-old mother of nine grown children. Her husband works at a tire shop. She currently operates a business of making tapa [a traditional Tongan cloth]. Her sisters-in-law help her with making tapa. They meet once a week to make tapa and take turns doing various tasks throughout the day. 'Atelaite prepares her own soft tapa and also sells some to other women. When her finished tapas are ready, they are shipped to be sold overseas. Her family receives a good income from this business. Through this business, 'Atelaite is able to partner with her husband with providing for their family.

In April, a strong cyclone hit Tonga and caused severe damage. 'Atelaite’s house was badly damaged. Not only was the roof blown off, but water seeped into the house and flooded the property. Two of her finished tapas were ruined.

'Atelaite is applying for a revitalization loan to buy mulberry bark so that she can continue her business and to pay for the repair of her damaged roof.
