Dema Et Gaynaka Group's story

Madama Mariama is 48 years old and is the leader of the group Dema et Gaynaka, which means Crop and Animal Farmer. She has been working as an animal farmer for twenty years.

She is married to a crop farmer and they have three children, all of whom are in school. She lives in Tambacounda, a region in Senegal, where she runs her business along with the nine other group members.

Madame Mariama is not educated. She is a hard-working woman who dreams of expanding her herd to improve. She purchases her animals at the weekly markets. After taking good care of her sheep, she resells them as a mobile salesperson at the markets for prices that are profitable for her. She is thus able to take care of her needs while helping her husband take care of the children.

Madame Mariama is taking out this loan to purchase sheep. However, she sometimes experiences cattle theft and illnesses which may present challenges for reaching her goals.
