Maria Jose's story

Maria Jose is a single mother. She has one young son who is in school. They live in a house that they rent. They live in Portoviejo which was affected by the April 16, 2016 earthquake and now by the Covid-19 pandemic.. The city is rich with the production of vegetables and tropical fruits for consumption.

Maria Jose works hard selling products from catalogs including clothing from different brands and makeup that she buys from a distributor who gives her good prices. She thus obtains good income. She sells from her house and through social networks. She sometimes provides credit to her customers and collects weekly. During this worldwide crisis, she's had economic difficulties. Her customers cannot pay her because they've lost jobs and others have died. The health crisis at the beginning was very bad because she couldn't sell but now she has decided to continue only with the cosmetic sales which she mails to homes so that she can keep earning. With this new loan, she will buy costume jewelry, perfumes, creams and makeup. Her dream is to have her own house and have a shop where she can keep selling clothing and makeup.
