Yasmeen's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!
A loan helped me empower Black, LatinX, and LGBTQ+ youth to tell their stories through live streaming.
Sometimes the reality of our financial obligations forces us to make decisions that don't align with our personal goals but after being a stay-at-home mom for almost ten years to two amazing boys. I was unable to find positions that valued my experience. I realized my only option was to figure out how to create a business that would financially support myself and my family. Little did I know that my first poorly-lit live stream broadcast in October 2015 would not only transform my life but the lives of the young people I worked with. Urban Stream Media was born out of my experience as the host of Streaming With Yas in November 2016, a weekly live streamed show. It was through this experience I was able to transform the power of creating live video content into a viable business that now teaches young people how to empower themselves through live streaming and podcast production. Three years ago, thanks to the Kiva community I used my first Kiva loan to register Urban Stream Media as an LLC, hire a branding agency to build my company’s website, and logo, and purchase equipment. As a result of this investment, I secured partnerships with two New York City non-profits, and one elementary public school. Now, with the help of a new Kiva loan, I hope to continue to expand Urban Stream’s reach of helping young people share their voices and creativity through live stream and podcasting.
