Chanika's story

As a single mother I often experienced financial and food insecurities. As I decided to go back to school with the goal in mind to be more financially secure I wanted to make sure I chose a career field in which I could help and serve others. Through my journey I found myself participating in the AmeriCorps program which places compassionate and caring individuals within nonprofits with the goal in mind to help the nonprofit expand their engagement and outreach to vulnerable communities. Signing up for this program was the best decision I have ever made. The AmeriCorp program has taught me to how to network, speak up for those most vulnerable and to become a leader in the Agriculture community around Phoenix. After 2 terms in AmeriCorp I was hired to manage the Urban Farm at which I was placed that grows food to feed the homeless population that the organization serves. After 1 year in my position as the Urban Farm Manager I received training in Beekeeping which helps in the production of food. Beekeeping has become a great passion of mine and I am currently looking for ways to share my passion with others who are looking for environmentally friendly ways to impact food production & accessibility and who are looking for a was to become financially secure. I have recently learned over the past year that there are very little to no African American beekeepers in the Phoenix area and that has driven me to create a space for people who look like me to become Beekeepers. I want to provide thorough, fun and hands on training to my community. If I can raise $26,000 I can provide all participants with there own equipment and materials needed to start their own beekeeping business. The program I created will also encourage those trained to help in creating a sustainable and versatile program to teach more individuals interested in the art of Beekeeping. It is my mission to increase interest and knowledge on the ways that Bees help in our environment.
