A loan helped to buy more ingredients for ice cream, as well as seeds and fertilizer for the crops.

Mujeres De Prosperidad Group's story

In the Republic of Guatemala, it is common to see men and women preparing and selling delicious chocolate-covered fruit and fruit ice creams called “chocofrutas” on the streets. Marina, a woman who has been studying for 8 years, is dedicated to this business. She shares: "I am a proud single mother of 4 children aged 3-12. Thanks to my determination to get ahead I have a thriving business. I also take advantage of a small plot of land to grow corn and then sell the grains wholesale." With a lot of effort, Marina sends 2 of her children to school. She requests the 1st loan from Kiva to buy more ingredients for the ice cream, as well as seeds and fertilizer for the crops.

There are 7 women in the Puente de Amistad community bank "Mujeres de Prosperidad" who are originally from the coastal area of the Department (state) of Suchitepéquez. They run businesses such as selling fruit ice cream and "chocofrutas", growing corn, raising pigs, and reselling animals. These women sell their products within their community and in neighboring places. In the monthly meetings a facilitator talks to them about important issues and applicable topics for their lives such as hygiene, disinfecting surfaces, washing hands, wearing masks, keeping physical distance. Other essential topics for their businesses are budget and investment.

Puente de Amistad's "Microcredit Plus" program (loans, education, health) is of value to these women. So is the generosity of Kiva's lenders. Thank you!
