Book Xalat Diaoulé Group's story

Madame Fatou is the leader of the Book Xalat Diaoulé Group, which is made up of six members (five women and one man). The group's name is from the Wolof language and in French means "avoir la même pensée" [to think the same].

Madame Fatou is 57 years old and married. She is caregiver to five of her grandchildren, who are between the ages of four and nine. All the children go to school. She and her husband are merchants, as are all the other group members. Madame Fatou has been in this business for over 30 years.

They formed this group to request a loan to strengthen their business and increase their incomes. With the loan, she plans to buy food products (onions, pepper, dried fish, chillis, etc.) She buys these items in bulk at the markets in Kaolack, Diourbel, and Touba. She then retails the products in her community for cash.

Madame Fatou is very motivated, and her business is profitable. Her income allows her to help her husband as much as possible with the family's basic needs, particularly those of the children (healthcare, food, education, hygiene, etc.).

She wishes for the well-being of her entire household. The main challenges for Madame Fatou are transportation and a very small living space.
