A loan helped buy seasonal fruits and vegetables at the wholesale level.

Las Palmas Group's story

It is challenging for girls growing up in rural Guatemala to attend elementary school and nearly impossible for them to go to the university. This is true of 29-year-old Isabel who grew up in a family with scant resources. She is a married mother with 4 children (10 months - 11 yrs). Fortunately, her oldest 2 children are in the 2nd and 4th grades. Several years ago, she noticed that there was a business opportunity in her area to sell fruits and vegetables. So Isabel started a business that is growing and now she needs her 3rd Kiva loan to buy seasonal fruits and vegetables at the wholesale level.

Isabel is a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Palmas” located in a rural area in the department/state of Quiche. Most of the 13 Maya K’iche ladies in the group sell fruits and vegetables. They look forward to their monthly meetings when the women participate in educational sessions that inform them about their businesses, health, family matters and women’s issues. The information is helpful to them because they have little or no formal education and often they share it with family and friends. Every other month, the women have access to a visiting nurse. This combination of loans, education and health care is called “Microcredit Plus”.

Isabel and her friends are grateful to Kiva investors for funding their much needed loans. Thank you to each of you!
