A loan helped To empower farmers and fishers in East Africa with increased incomes during COVID-19.
In East Africa, smallholder farmers are unable to farm their arable land due to increasingly unpredictable rains. Only 2% use any form of irrigation. Fishers spend one-third of their income on highly pollutive, dangerous kerosene lanterns in order to fish at night during the new moon period. They lack access to affordable productive use equipment to grow their small businesses. Based in Tanzania and Uganda, Simusolar distributes and provides financing for solar-powered water pumps and fishing lights to communities near Lake Victoria. Simusolar offers a lease-to-own model for fishing lights. They focus on service and affordability to enable customers to move up the energy ladder. Farmers report increased yields per acre and reduced operating costs. Fishers report a 42% savings due to decreased fuel expenditures. Each solar fishing light saves 1.6 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. View Simusolar’s work with agribusinesses here. This loan of $100,000 provides flexible working capital for Simusolar to sustain operations and continue improving the lives of farmers and fishers in East Africa despite the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is Simusolar’s fourth direct loan. Kiva granted a repayment deferment on their current loan outstanding. View Simusolar’s other loans here and here.
