but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped a women-owned business overcome the challenges posed by the COVID-19 crisis.

Karla's story

I'm from San Juan, Puerto Rico but moved to the US and Europe to study and complete a BFA in Furniture Design from Rhode Island School of Design and a Masters in Footwear Design from Polimoda. Designing to improve quality of life is my passion and I've channeled this through 10+ years experience in the footwear industry. My very first shoe experience was at TOMS Shoes back in 2006 a year after their launch. This experience taught me, more than anything, a consumer goods company can (and should) be deeply and genuinely tied to a mission. Since then, I've managed footwear production in various countries including Brazil, China, Spain, Mexico, US, and now with Isleñas, I can add to this list Puerto Rico! I believe manufacturing is a powerful tool to provide opportunity to people from all walks of life and a vehicle for social transformation in a depressed economy. When I received an opportunity to be part of a business accelerator in Puerto Rico a year after hurricane Maria, I did not think it twice; after living abroad since 2008 I returned back home to launch an opportunity in the needle industry and creative field for myself and others with Isleñas.
