Mmodenmmo Trust Bank Group's story

Abena is a 55-year-old woman who describes herself as hard-working. She is married and has 8 children ranging in age from 14 to 35 years old. Abena’s husband is a farmer. Abena would like to provide quality education for her two youngest children. For the past 25 years, Abena has operated a food retail business selling 'kenkey'. 'Kenkey' is a maize-based dough ball that is usually eaten with pepper sauce and fish. Abena will use the loan to buy more maize to prepare 'kenkey'. She hopes to expand her business by supplying 'kenkey' to stores in towns such as Kumawu and Abofanso. Abena is currently the leader of the group named "Mmodenmmo", which means “hard-working” in Twi, the language most commonly spoken in Ghana. There are 10 members in this group. The other members in the group also operate retail businesses selling items such as fresh tomatoes, yams, onions, 'kenkey', rice and stew. The members in the group live in the same area and trust each other. They plan to use the loan to buy various inventory to grow their business to enable them to better support their families.
