A loan helped purchase blankets, plastic tubs, pastries, and seafood for her husband to sell.

Betsi Mailene's story

Betsi Mailene is in a common-law marriage and has five adult children. Her partner sells seafood as a street vendor. They live in a house that they own in Portoviejo. Portoviejo was impacted by the earthquake on April 16, 2016 and is now in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The city is a major producer of vegetables, legumes, and tropic fruits for domestic consumption.

Betsi Mailene sells clothing for women, men and children, blankets, socks, and plastic home goods. She sells everyday out of her house. Things were very bad for her at the start of the health crisis since she was unable to work. However, little by little she has been able to restart her business, allowing her to earn an income. She will use this loan to purchase blankets, plastic tubs, pastries, and seafood for her husband to sell. Her dreams are to have her own retail space and for her family to be healthy.
