La Naranja Community Bank Group's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped to provide basic financial services and financial inclusion to a community-owned bank in rural Nicaragua.

La Naranja Community Bank Group's story

La Naranja is a rural community in northern Nicaragua whose main economic activity is the production of coffee, basic grains, and vegetables. La Naranja has a very important history in the country, and was part of the peace agreements that ended the civil war in the late 1980's. La Naranja has 695 inhabitants and stands out for its organizational capacity in the development of local projects.

In 2018, the community-owned bank was founded with the support of Global Brigades, which has been a vital community-led organisation for the people in La Naranja, since it is very far from urban areas. Some of the community bank's achievements have been saving to provide sanitation infrastructure and providing access to loans for the farmer members to purchase agriculture supplies like seeds and equipment.

Half of the members are women. Members are highly committed to the growth of their community bank as it has given them the opportunity to expand their small farms and improve their quality of life.

With this loan, the community-owned bank will provide access to needed working capital to different community bank members of La Naranja. Also, part of the interest generated by these smaller loans will help the community-owned bank’s growth in the near-future.
