Horonya Group's story
The group Horonya of the association Benkadi is composed of married women of the city of Tènèni, Region of Ségou (4th administrative region of the Republic of Mali). The group members live in large traditional families, and they know one another through neighborhood ties. They average 45 years of age and have at least seven children. The group members have one year of experience with the micro-finance institution Soro Yiriwaso, and they do commerce in condiments and in food catering. Mata Koïta, one of the restauranteurs in the group, plans on using her loan for buying fish and the ingredients for food catering purposes. Each day, she purchases twelve baskets of fish, 1 kg of onions, a basket of tomatoes, and sundry other condiments. She resupplies herself at the big market of Tènèni. She sells her dishes to a diverse and varied customer base. Mata is hoping for a profit of 12,000 francs CFA, while the other group members plan on making 8,000 francs per month. This profit will be used not only for repaying the loan but also for helping out their husbands and reinvesting in their businesses.
