Book Joom Ndrame Escale Group's story

Mariama is the president of the "Book Joom Ndrame Escale" group, meaning "sharing the same ambition" in Wolof. This group is made up of nine women who have decided to take out a loan to finance their livestock business. All members of the group are experienced. Mariama is 45 years old and is married with one 11-year-old child who is in school. She is a livestock farmer and has been working in this business for ten years. The business is solvent and profitable.

Mariama is borrowing money to buy sheep and goats for her business. She usually buys her animals from local weekly markets which she sells on at markets in her surrounding area. This loan will enable her to expand her business and the income will allow her to improve her family's standard of living, particularly her children's education, health and clothing.

Outside of the group's activity, she is also involved in retail trade, and during winter Mariama cultivates her fields. Her biggest wish is to become a large-scale livestock farmer and be able to participate in the livestock fairs in her region.
