A loan helped to buy pandanus leaves for her weaving.

Vaifo'ou's story

This is Vaifo'ou. She is 55 years old and married with three grown children. She and her husband live in their own home, with only their youngest.

Vaifo'ou has been running her business of weaving for more than 20 years, and it has been her main source of income for many years. Her husband helps her by growing their own pandanus trees so she would not waste money on buying pandanus when she had her own. She weaves taovala and mats, with white pandanus then sells it out at the local market and also overseas.

Her business market has been affected by the lock-down. In April this year, Tropical Cyclone Harold hit Tonga, causing a lot of damage. Vaifo'ou's pandanus trees were badly damage and now they cannot be used. Therefore Vaifo'ou is applying for a loan to buy pandanus leaves in order for her business to continue running.
