Biolite Kenya's story
Today more than 1.2 billion people live with limited or no access to electricity. Low-income families in rural, off-grid environments are forced to purchase dirty and expensive kerosene lamps for lighting. While mobile phones have become a widespread tool for economic development, it is difficult to locate reliable and inexpensive electricity to recharge these devices. BioLite provides affordable clean energy technologies to rural households in East Africa, including clean cookstoves, solar lighting and solar-powered device charging solutions. BioLite’s SolarHome 620 product harnesses solar power to bring modern lighting, energy and entertainment to homes not served by the traditional grid. According to an independent impact study, BioLite reaches the most poor and remote customers in East Africa. More than 70% of BioLite’s customers live in poverty. In 2019, BioLite impacted 797,242 people, generated over 897 million watt hours of clean energy and offset over 307,000 tonnes of CO2. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, BioLite was the fastest growing solar home systems company in East Africa. This loan of $200,000 provides flexible working capital in order for the company to continue its mission to bring energy everywhere. This is BioLite's third Kiva loan. Kiva granted a 6-month repayment moratorium on its outstanding loan. View previous loans here and here.
