A loan helped to buy children’s clothing to resell.

Los Girasoles Group's story

The colorful traditional clothing worn by the indigenous Maya is filled with embroidered or woven symbols and highly prized in the culture. Juana, a married mother of 4 children (aged 3-15), sells this clothing and woven cane baskets in her community, as well as in the department/state of Solola. She wants to add children’s clothing to her inventory to resell, and is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy a quantity of it.

Juana is a member of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Girasoles” or “The Sunflowers” along with 7 other Maya K’iche ladies. As the women have no formal education, they benefit greatly from their monthly educational training sessions, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care services.

Usually the women meet monthly to make loan payments and to learn about an aspect of 4 subjects: health, family, women, business. However, due to the coronavirus restrictions, their Facilitator has communicated with them via cell or WhatsApp. She has emphasized the importance of washing hands, disinfecting surfaces, wearing masks and keeping physical distance. A visiting nurse, who usually comes to the meetings every other month, also communicates with them in this way.

Since there is no public transportation, quarantines have been imposed and markets closed or operating with reduced hours, so this is an extremely challenging time. Families are facing tremendous challenges. Thank you for your support!

The children in the photo are children of the borrowers.
