A loan helped to buy pandanus for her weaving and also hire women to help her with her weaving.

'ema's story

This is 'Ema. She is a 46-year-old mother of three teenagers and her husband is a farmer. They live in their own home.

'Ema runs a business of weaving and her older sister joins her for weaving. Sometimes, they do their weaving at 'Ema's house and, sometimes, they go over to her sister's house. They weave fihu, mats, and taovala, but with white pandanus only.

'Ema has been running this business with her sister for more than twenty years, because it was taken back by a memory of their mother.

They grew up on the island of Ha'apai and weaving was their main business. Their mother taught them how to do the weaving, in order for them to make their own living.

They always send their products overseas, but due to the lock-down, they sell their products locally. 'Ema applied for a loan in order to buy pandanus and hire women to help her with her weaving.
