Joy's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped a black, woman-owned business pivot through the COVID -19 crisis.

Joy's story

Hi, I’m Joy Fennell. I’m a Harlem based makeup artist originally from Prince George’s County, Maryland. I first got into makeup during my college journey as a student studying African American Studies at the University of Maryland. Since then I’ve championed more inclusion in the beauty and fashion industry. I’ve been in the beauty industry for over 20 years. During my career, I’ve worked with a number of notable clients. My industry experience helps me put my clients at ease so that they’re more confident and ready to perform their job. My strength is making people look and feel their best, naturally. My goal is simply to enhance the beauty that is already present; To amplify what is already there. I grew up with people constantly questioning whether or not I had the right to have a voice. Whether or not my "beauty" was "beauty" at all. I grew up with people thinking that I should play the sidelines. That my voice wasn't a voice that needed to be heard. I grew up thinking that dimming my light was the best way to exist. Not anymore. The Joy in Beauty is a safe space where all voices are important. We all have a chance to shine. It was created to serve as a reminder that there is Joy in Beauty and it belongs to all of us.
