Canasta De Flores Group's story

Alma is an empowered woman who is 35 years old, and lives in the rural area of the department / state of Quiché. She is a married woman and mother of 5 children (3 months to 13 years old). Because the family is large and her husband's income is low, Alma decided to start a business. She raises and sells goats, pigs, chickens. Part of her income is used by Alma for the education of her children. Because she cannot circulate freely in her city due to coronavirus restrictions, Alma sells in her community. Alma applies for the 5th Kiva loan to invest in the business. She will buy pigs and chickens.

Alma is president of the Communal Bank of Friendship Bridge "Flower Basket", she is joined by 9 other Maya K'iche women. They have no formal education but are proud of their businesses that include convenience stores, corn tortillas, and animal husbandry (chickens, pigs, goats). The monthly educational trainings, which are part of the "Microcredit Plus" program of loans, education and health services, are essential for its success. They generally meet monthly with a facilitator who shares information with them on health, family, women's, and business issues. Due to the coronavirus, the Facilitator communicates with them by cell phone or "WhatsApp". This month the theme will be "Ideas to open other businesses and offer home delivery".

Alma thanks KIVA lenders for financing these loans. Thank you!
