A loan helped a single mom to buy farm inputs, such as fertilizer.

Degla's story

Degla (ever-smiling) is a 31-year-old single mother of 1 school-going child. She is a hardworking mom from a remote village in the Sotik area of Kenya. Thanks to her daily efforts, she has managed to give her family a good start by providing them with a good quality of life.

Degla has a farm where she grows different crops and raises livestock; she also earns some income from a personal business.

The Sotik area is a favorable one for farming, so she is seeking a loan of 100,000 Kenyan shillings (KES) through Kiva's field partner Juhudi Kilimo, to buy farm inputs, such as fertilizer. This will enable her to grow more crops, reap maximum profits, and expand her business.

Being a poor woman and accessing funds in Kenya, especially around Degla's remote village, is very challenging, but she feels relieved knowing there are institutions such as Kiva that help enterprising women like herself. She is always working to improve her family’s living conditions, but her biggest dreams are to become independent and to secure her family’s future.

She is a borrower who has a good credit history and is worth supporting.
