A loan helped to buy wholesale organic fertilizer.

Flor De Zapote Group's story

Guatemala, known as the "Heart of the Mayan World", is a country with rich cultural traditions that includes beautiful textiles and a variety of agriculture.

This is the business of Catalina, 25, a married woman and mother of 5 children ages 5-15. Her husband collaborates with her in the agricultural business of cardamom, beans and bananas. Catalina and her husband dedicate part of their income to the primary education of their 4 older children.

She knows that wintertime is a good time to prepare the land and plant. Catalina is requesting her 2nd Kiva loan to buy wholesale organic fertilizer.

Catalina is treasurer of the Communal Bank of Puente de Amistad “Flor de Zapote, along with 7 other women. These women speak the native language Poqomchi and, with difficulty, Spanish. All of these women are farmers of cardamom, banana, sugar cane and beans.

The monthly educational trainings, which are part of the organization's "Microcredit Plus" program, have been of great value to them. They have learned how to save, prioritize expenses, budget, and the importance of nutrition and healthy practices. Since they cannot meet at the present time, their facilitator contacts them by cellphone or "WhatsApp" and emphasizes the importance of social distance, the use of masks, surface disinfection and hand washing. (The children in the photograph are children of the borrowers).

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for your kindness in financing loans for these Mayan women.
