Avery's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!
A loan helped our farm to become profitable while providing USDA Certified Organic vegetables to our community.
My background: Native Hawaiian born in Hawai'i, but raised in the continental United States. I'm the son of a landscaper and was raised around plants and gardens. I started first landscaping company at age 17. Later I attended UC Berkeley and earned a degree in Chemical Engineering. I returned to Hawaii to grow microalgae for fuel, feed and natural products. My wife's background: Born in the Netherlands to a missionary family. She lived in India and several European countries before attending high school on the Big Island. She managed a coffee farm for several years and also created a coffee label that was sold directly at Oahu farmer's markets and California coffee shops. She is a foodie and has been an organic farming activist in Hawaii for the last 10 years. Together: In 2016 we bought a 3.4 acre USDA certified organic farm with about 1000 coffee trees. Since then we have been trying to figure out how to move to the farm (we currently live a few miles away) and produce food for our community. With the loss of my day job and the Covid-19 pandemic, it has become more difficult to meet our goal. We want to start selling leafy greens at local farmers markets to meet the huge demand we see for local, high-quality, organic produce. We are also in the process of applying for a separate loan to bring all the coffee processing in-house and build a commercial kitchen on property to make local, organic food products.
