Michael's loan finished fundraising,
but these similar borrowers just need a little more help to reach their goals!

A loan helped us move to a larger training facility and acquire mats to increase our training area.

Michael's story

I am example of what the martial arts can do to motivate, inspire, and transform lives! I was raised in a rural community of Nebraska where I was diagnosed at an early age with what then called Hyper-kinetic Disorder (now know as ADHD). Because I behaved differently than the other children in my town I was a constant target by school yard bullies, which in some ways, every kid expects and has to learn to deal with. What I was not expecting was the level of bullying that I received from the teachers. Attitudes such as a quick boot to the posterior will get him focused and pay attention most certainly did not help. It was through the practice of martial arts that I was able to develop focus, determination, and self-control I eventually was able to go from a 2.0 C average student in high school to the Dean's List in College and go on to receive my Masters Degree in Homeland Security with honors. I took the opportunities that my training gave me to serve a career in the United States Navy Reserve, where I eventually retired in 2017. I also went on to serve in the Douglas County Department of Corrections as a line officer, defensive tactics instructor, and a field training officer. It has been been my pleasure and joy to take the life lessons that the Martial Arts has provided me and find opportunities to reach the youth of my rural community. It was through teaching that I have found greater peace with my life as a corrections and military member. My passion is teaching the martial arts to those who live in rural communities. Larger cities have a large selection when it comes to choosing an option to build confidence, self-control, and focus while learning self-defense. The rural communities are most often forced to drive long distances to a nearby city in order to practice the martial arts.
