Visionfund Ecuador's story
VisionFund Ecuador’s operations are in some of the most difficult and less secure regions of Ecuador along the border with Colombia. This region has been impacted over the past few decades from Colombians fleeing the civil war. VisionFund Ecuador has been working with Kiva to support these vulnerable and underserved communities in the border region for 10 years. Since 2011, VisionFund Ecuador has worked with Kiva lenders to provide loans to over 11,000 people with more than $10 million lent through the Kiva platform. VisionFund Ecuador recently converted into a bank to improve the services they offer to their clients, which include savings accounts, microcredit, insurance, and financial education and training. VisionFund Ecuador is a great success story for Kiva as they were a small non-profit when they began partnering with Kiva. They have now become a successful bank, and while historically a stable and growing organization, their operations have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 crisis that led Ecuador to initiate a nationwide lockdown. This resulted in a reduction of their ability to disburse loans and to receive repayments on the loans that they disbursed before the crisis. This loan is part of Kiva’s Crisis Support Loan program to assist our Field Partners directly so they can continue to support our borrowers. Because it is part of a pilot program, this loan may have higher risk. Read more in the “More about this loan” section below.
