A loan helped me to produce conscious and sustainable travel and events.
Born and bred in Denver, Colorado, I was always fascinated with the greater and more complex world. At the first offering, I enrolled in the International Baccalaureate Program at my high school and continued my study through International Political Economy at the University of Puget Sound. I studied abroad in Cameroon and Switzerland and sought to save the world working in development and human rights. I worked for the Africa Program at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) reviewing and awarding grants to indigenous African organizations promoting democracy and human rights throughout sub-Saharan Africa. I assisted in political analysis, strategic planning, grant writing, and grant monitoring. I liaised with core institutions as well as governmental, multilateral and NGO partners. I was on the path to where I wanted to go. NED suggested that I attend graduate school so I could advance my position and career. I took a summer sabbatical to move back to the mountains in Colorado and work on grad school applications. I met a woman who owed a safari company and she offered to create a position for me to manage her advocacy and conservation travel programs. I said yes, as it was the best of both my worlds - the ability to live in the Colorado mountains and do meaningful work and travel in Africa. I worked for her for over five years and in the end wanted to create something of my own that was more authentic to my ethos and values. I created 11.7Africa - a safari company. I owned and operated it for seven years successfully. I again wanted more, to do better, to expand to the world outside Africa. I took on advisement in Europe and created Roov Productions to incorporate more of the freelance production work that I had been doing for clients worldwide.
